Ingress protection is a topic that is frequently discussed in the field of motors. Do you know why electric motors get water inside? Let’s find out together.
When the motor is operating, the internal temperature rises, causing the air pressure to increase, and it needs to release the air externally. Conversely, when the temperature drops, the air pressure decreases, and the motor will draw in air internally.
If the glue seal between the end cover and the hub is not sufficient, or the seal between the shaft and the motor wire is not adequate, as well as if there are high-pressure air holes on the motor end cover, then during use, the motor will experience internal breathing, resulting in water infiltration.
Therefore, the material of the oil seal, the grade of the grease, the smoothness of the shaft, and the tolerance dimensions all determine the aging time of the oil seal, leading to water infiltration due to aging.

So how to do ingress protection against water ingress?

Firstly, for the waterproof testing of the new motor, QS Motor has developed its own high-pressure airtight machine. The working principle is to apply 25 seconds of high-pressure air to the motor cavity through the motor wire. Based on the air pressure value, we can determine if there is a problem with the motor.
If there is a problem, we will submerge the motor for repeated high-pressure testing to identify the leakage point.
At the same time, the aging verification of the oil seal will be carried out. The quality of the oil seal is also very important. QS Motor use high-quality oil seals to ensure higher density, for better ingress protection.
Through testing the smoothness and concentricity of the shaft, the tolerance value, wear resistance and grease of the oil seal to ensure the strength of the oil seal.
During use, everyone should also take good care of it! Do not directly use a high-pressure water gun to clean the motor. We can wipe it with a damp cloth.
After the motor gets water, it should be dried in time. Regularly check the status of the oil seal and replace it in time.
